Glass Safety at Home – What Coffs Harbour Residents Should Know

Glass is one of those materials we're surrounded by every day but rarely think about – until something goes wrong. Understanding the basics of glass safety can help Coffs Harbour homeowners make better decisions when replacing glass, renovating, or assessing existing glazing in their homes.

Safety Glazing Requirements in Australia

Australia's building codes include requirements for safety glazing in certain locations within homes. These requirements exist because standard glass, when broken, can shatter into sharp, dangerous shards that cause serious injuries.

Safety glazing – including toughened (tempered) glass and laminated glass – is required in locations such as shower screens and wet areas, glass near floor level (typically glass panels that extend to within 500mm of the floor), glass in or adjacent to doors, glass in stairwells and balustrades, and glass in areas where people are likely to fall or walk into it.

What Is Toughened Glass?

Toughened glass is heat-treated to make it significantly stronger than standard glass. If it does break, it shatters into small, rounded pieces rather than sharp shards, greatly reducing the risk of serious injury.

What Is Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer bonded between two glass panels. When broken, the glass fragments adhere to the interlayer and the panel holds together, preventing dangerous shards from falling. It's commonly used in car windscreens and is increasingly specified for residential and commercial glazing.

Older Homes and Non-Compliant Glass

Many older homes in Coffs Harbour may have standard glass in locations that now require safety glazing under current standards. While you're not legally required to upgrade existing glass if your home was built before the relevant codes, it's worth considering replacement if you have children or if the glass is in a high-risk location.

Our team can assess your existing glazing and advise on whether replacement with safety glass is recommended for specific areas of your home.
